A Fulton County, Georgia, detention officer faces multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting inmates at the Fulton County Jail on Sunday and then failing to accurately report what happened, officials said.
Detention Officer Demarcus Whatley, 25, is charged with three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of cruelty to prisoners, four counts of breach of oath by a public officer, one count of false statements and writings, withholding of facts, and fraudulent documents and one reckless behavior. He’s behind bars with no bond.
Officials said the prison investigation unit began investigating Whatley after receiving an inmate complaint against him, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
After analyzing video footage, it was determined that he used excessive force against three inmates during an incident on Sunday and failed to accurately report it.

“Detention officers have a responsibility to treat those in their custody humanely and with respect,” Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat said in a statement.
He continued, “When an officer deviates from this duty, he must be held accountable. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is committed to thoroughly investigating allegations of officer misconduct. As sheriff, I remain committed to transparency and act promptly and appropriately action if those claims are sustained.”
Whatley, who was hired as a detention officer on March 1, has been fired by the sheriff’s office.

In March, detention officer Kawana Jenkins, 36, was arrested after a phone discovered during a shakedown in the prison’s maximum security wing allegedly showed she had an inappropriate relationship with an inmate.
Jenkins was charged with two counts of inappropriate sexual contact by an employee or agent, five counts of breach of oath by a public official, two counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of cruelty to prisoners and one count of obtaining, obtaining or giving of a prisoner. prohibited items without permission.

In February, detention officer Reynard Trotman was arrested after allegedly assaulting a detainee.
