A Georgia man was killed Sunday when a tree fell and crushed him during severe thunderstorms that left thousands in the state without power.

First responders found the man, identified as George Heery Jr., 55, struggling to breathe on Atlanta’s Delmont Drive Northeast, FOX5 Atlanta reported, citing police.

Despite life-saving efforts, police said he was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital.

The severe storm brought damaging winds and heavy rainfall, leaving 300,000 Georgians without power at one point, according to the station.

Georgia Power said crews were working to assess the damage and restore power to customers.

“In the worst hit areas, our team is working to clear the damage and turn the lights back on for customers,” the energy provider tweeted. “If you are in an area that has been hit by high winds, heavy rain, fallen trees or other hazardous conditions, keep safety a top priority.”
