Liza Burke, the University of Georgia student who was hospitalized last month after suffering a brain hemorrhage during a spring break trip to Cabo San Lucas and diagnosed with a brain tumor, died early Friday morning, her family said.

“Liza is now reunited with her sister and they are making up for lost time!” her family said in an update on a website where they chronicled her treatment. Her sister Edie died in 2008 from a rare genetic condition.

The family post continued, “Liza took one last breath, sighed and passed on to the next realm… After the Hospice was called, we dressed Liza in colorful pajamas donated by her boyfriend’s mother and Jack’s girlfriend, Elli, braided her hair. Liza’s father, uncle and some of my UGA friends came in to say goodbye.”

They said “celebrations of Liza’s great energy” were planned, including one in Athens, Georgia, held by her college friends and another in her hometown of Asheville, North Carolina.

Last week, the family said they had decided to stop radiation after Burke failed to respond to treatment after six weeks, saying they wanted to “give Liza a goodbye as only she deserves!”

“Tonight we start the hunt for the perfect place by the sea where Liza can enjoy her last days, supported by the infinite love that surrounds her!” said the April 17 update.

They also said they plan to set up a fund in Liza and Edie’s name with the Foundation of the Carolinas.
