FIRST ON FOX: California Governor Gavin Newsom declined to approve the cash payments — which can reach $1.2 million for a single recipient — recommended by his reparations task force. much more than cash payments.”

“The independent findings and recommendations of the Reparations Task Force are a milestone in our two-pronged effort to advance justice and promote healing. This has been an important process and we must continue to work as a nation to atone for and understand our original sin of slavery how that history has shaped our country,” Newsom said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

While applauding the task force’s work, the Democratic governor declined to endorse specific recommendations, though he pledged to “continue to make systemic changes that ensure an inclusive and equitable future for all Californians.”

“Dealing with that legacy is about much more than cash payments. Many of the Task Force’s recommendations are critical points of action that we have already worked hard on: removing barriers to voting, strengthening resources to address hate, sweeping law enforcement and judicial reforms to build trust and security, enhance economic mobility – all while investing billions to eradicate inequalities and improve equity in housing, education, healthcare and much more. This work must continue, “he said.

“Following the submission of the Task Force’s final report this summer, I look forward to continuing to work with the legislature to implement systemic changes that ensure an inclusive and equitable future for all Californians.”

The task force’s recommendation breaks down payments by types of historical discrimination. Black residents affected by bank redlining, for example, would receive $3,366 for each year they lived in California from the early 1930s to the late 1970s, amounting to $148,099.

Similarly, black residents could receive about $2,352 in compensation for excessive policing and mass incarceration for every year they lived in California between 1970 and 2020. Those payments could amount to $115,260. For a black Californian who ticks enough boxes, the total payout could be $1.2 million.

The task force’s final recommendations will soon be presented to the California legislature, which will then decide whether to implement the measures and send them to Newsom’s office to be signed into law.

“This has been a silly message from the beginning,” James Gallagher, the Republican leader of the California Assembly, previously told Fox News Digital.

“Democrats promised the world with this reparations task force, and now the huge taxpayer bill is coming. Newsom has cornered himself and he will have to choose between signing a ridiculous policy that will bankrupt the state or for once and admit forever that this task force was nothing more than a political stunt.”
