The balance of the public debt denotes a strong increase in the last three years. At the end of 2019, 12,149 million dollars were recorded, according to figures from the Finance Secretary (Sefin).
By December 2022, the balance increased to 16,817.6 million dollars. In three years the increase in public debt has risen by 4,668.6 million dollars.
In relation to Gross domestic product (GDP) of Honduras, the balance of public debt went from 48.4% to 53.3% in the last three years.
In the 2017-2019 period, the balance increased from 10,928.1 to 12,149 million dollars, equivalent to 1,220.9 million dollars.

The report of the sefin indicates that the Honduran government has resorted to more internal than external debt to cover spending. In this sense, in the 2019 period the balance of internal debt increased from 4,829.9 to 8,147.4 million dollars, that is, 3,317.5 million more. This was reflected in a rise with respect to the Honduras GDP going from 19.2% to 25.8%.
However, the balance of external public debt went from 7,319.1 to 8,670.2 million dollars, with an increase of 1,351.1 million dollars. However, in relation to the GDP a reduction from 29.2% to 27.5% was reported.

The new resources are for the management of natural disasters, 510 million dollars; energy sector, 250 million; modernization of State, 200 million; budget support, 195 million; and agribusiness, 136 million, among others.
