Is There a Link Between Heart Health and Vitamin D? Are Vitamin E and Heart Health Connected? Researchers at the Women’s Health Initiative Hormone Replacement Therapy and Heart Health Research also investigated the role of other vitamins and minerals.
Because the calcification of plaques on arterial walls can cause coronary disease, researchers looked at the relationship between heart health and vitamin D-fortified calcium supplementation. After seven years, women taking these supplements had no reduced or increased risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart disease. While calcium and vitamin D are important for preventing osteoporosis, they don’t seem to play a role in heart health.
The trial of hormone replacement therapy and heart health was terminated early due to the number of side effects experienced by the women in the study. HRT was once believed to promote heart health, help prevent osteoporosis and improve the general health of postmenopausal women. After the Hormone Replacement Therapy and Heart Health study was published, recommendations regarding HRT were changed. It is now recommended that women who choose HRT to relieve the symptoms associated with menopause use the lowest dose, for the shortest possible time.
While there may be no connection between heart health and vitamin D, it is believed by many that vitamin E and heart health are clearly linked. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, meaning it reduces the negative effects of oxygen on the body. Preliminary research indicates that vitamin E limits the oxidation of “bad” cholesterol in the arteries. It may help prevent blood clots from forming. It naturally thins the blood to such an extent that high doses should be avoided by people taking blood-thinning medications or who have bleeding problems.
Other herbs, amino acids, and vitamins are believed to support heart health. These include l-arginine, ginkgo biloba, folic acid, potassium and magnesium. While hormone replacement therapy and heart health research have not focused on this, the better supplement manufacturers rely on the research of numerous groups to formulate products that support heart health.
