The Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo has warned of flooding in some areas of Kosovo as a result of water flooding due to rainfall.
Through an official announcement, IHMK says that rainy weather will continue in the following days.
“Based on the general meteorological situation in the country and in general in the region which is not stable, accompanied by rainfall, which until now has been of a local character with low to medium intensity and in some areas up to moderately high, have contributed to the river flows keeping their levels and flows stable, while some of them actually occurred in their average to near maximum quotas” – said IHMK.
The Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo adds that these rains have also affected the oversaturation of the soils, especially in the low areas and along the river courses.
“Such a situation with precipitation is expected to continue during the following days, where starting from tomorrow dt: 12/06/2023, it is expected that there will be precipitation in different intervals covering most of the country, while in some those areas will be more intense, which can create rapid floods, of a local character, especially in the rivers with the character of streams, which descend from the mountain ranges, where as a result there will be an excess of their transport capacities and the possibility of presenting difficulties in sewage systems, landslides, problems in traffic, agriculture, etc., the communiqué states.
IHMK clarifies that from these meteorological forecasts, first with precipitation and then hydrological with the possibility of flooding in the short term due to rain, it is predicted that they will have an impact especially on:
-Northern part: Ibri Basin (river systems of: Ibri, Sitnica Llapit, Drenica, etc.) where the Probability of exceeding a threshold of the 20-year flood return period: is 20% and 5-year: 24%.
– While the Western, southern and eastern parts (Drin i Bardhë Basin, Lepenci and Morava i Binca), a probability is predicted to exceed a threshold of the 5-year flood return period, i.e. a smaller amount of rainfall.
It is worth noting that Besim Aliu from the Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo said Kosovar media that similar weather will be until June 18.
“There will be an increase in temperatures, a slight increase. On Saturday and Sunday, noon will be 1 or 2 degrees lower, then next week there will be an increase in temperatures again, but the clouds will remain present for many days, that is. even for the next 9 days, until June 18, no radical change is foreseen, except that the temperatures will increase slightly”, he emphasized.
Ali also emphasized that there is a risk of hail in isolated areas.
