The heat wave in India is so hot that eggs can be cooked in the sun, as a man in West Bengal proved.
The state, like many others across India, records daytime temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius, according to media reports.
In a video uploaded on April 9 — when the government of Bengal first announced the closure of schools, colleges and universities due to an unforgiving heat wave — Facebook user “Puchu Babu” is seen cracking an egg on a black non-stick pan which he has stood outside on the terrace of his house for a while.
Even without a stove, the egg cooks completely to an omelette-like consistency within minutes.
The nearly four-minute video has since been viewed more than 2.1 million times on Facebook.
At least two states — Tripura in the northeast and West Bengal in the east — ordered schools to close this week as temperatures soared more than 5 degrees above normal.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday that all educational institutions in the state will remain closed until Saturday due to the severe heat wave.
On Wednesday, India’s Meteorological Department had also issued heat wave warnings for several regions in India, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha.
