Investigators found a kilogram of fentanyl stored on children’s play mats at the daycare, along with a device to press drugs into bricks for sale, according to court records. In a drop floor beneath the daycare play area, investigators found fentanyl, other narcotics and drug paraphernalia, police said.

The first two arrested were Grei Mendez, the daycare owner, Garcia’s wife, and Carlisto Acevedo Brito, Garcia’s cousin and Mendez’s tenant. They face federal charges of possession of narcotics with intent to distribute causing death and conspiracy to distribute narcotics causing death, as well as state charges including murder.
