A man from Dildo, NL has caught the attention of iceberg aficionados after photographing an oddly shaped hunk – now colloquially known as the “dickie mountain” on social media – off the coast of Newfoundland.

“I’m getting a lot of comments, a lot of comments on the photo because of the resemblance to… part of the male anatomy, let’s say,” chuckled drone photographer Ken Pretty.

In an interview Friday, Pretty said he noticed from his very first photo that the iceberg, in a part of the county known as Conception Bay, had online potential.

Photos of it on Facebook had been shared more than 3,000 times by Friday morning and garnered “a lot of comments,” Pretty said.

“Maybe I should call him,” one user wrote.

“Frozen stiff,” another commented.

Pretty says he’s lucky he got there when he did.

“It melts all the time. I mean, it can get limp,’ he said.

It’s already shaping up to be a peak year for icebergs in Newfoundland and Labrador, with tourists and locals alike sharing their encounters online after a string of less-than-impressive seasons.

Canadian Ice Service data shows more than 200 icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland since last week alone, with dozens more off the coast of Labrador heading south.

“Onland winds brought in both the pack ice and the mountains,” said Diane Davis, who runs a Facebook group for iceberg hunters in the county. “If the trend continues, we should see them for May and June as well. Mother nature only gave us a handful last year.”

But anyone who rushes to see Harbor Grace’s “dickie mountain” for themselves is in for a disappointment.

Facebook users say the tip fell off.
