“About 49,000 people died from gun violence in the US in 2021. An average of 134 people died from gun violence every day – one death every 11 minutes,” the report said.

He stated that 48,830 people lost their lives due to firearms in 2021, with more than 3,600 deaths compared to 2020, which was the previous record high. The report revealed that of these, 26,328 suicides by firearm occurred in 2021 and 20,958 homicides were recorded.

According to the report, the gun-suicide rate represents an 8.3% increase over 2020, while the gun-homicide rate rose 7.6%, the largest increase in a year in more than four decades.

“Guns once again became the leading cause of death among children and youth in 2021, causing more deaths than COVID-19, car crashes or cancer,” the report said.

The study also showed that Blacks were disproportionately affected by gun killings. According to the report, Blacks were nearly 14 times more likely to die from gun violence than their white counterparts.

“Young Black men (15-34) are disproportionately affected – they accounted for 36% of all gun homicides in 2021, despite representing 2% of the total population in the US in the same age group,” the report said.

The report summarized data using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Core Cause of Death database.

He urged policymakers to address the easy access and availability of firearms, which they say is driving the US’ high suicide and homicide rates.
