According to data released by the United Nations, India is on its way to becoming the world’s most populous country, surpassing China with nearly 3 million people in the middle of this year.
Demographic data released Wednesday from the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) “State of the World Population 2023 Report” estimates India’s population at 1.4286 billion and China’s at 1.4257 billion.
The data showed that the United States ranks a distant third with an estimated population of 340 million.
The report stated that the data reflect current information as of February 2023.
Using pre-UN data, population experts predict that India will overtake China this month. But the latest report from the global organization did not specify a date for when the change would take place.
UN census officials said it was impossible to set a date due to “uncertainty” about data from India and China, particularly as India’s last census was held in 2011 and the next census in 2021 has been delayed due to the pandemic. .

While India and China will account for more than a third of the estimated world population of 8,045 billion, population growth in both Asian giants is slowing much faster in China than in India.
Last year, China’s population fell for the first time in six decades; This is a historic turn that is expected to mark the beginning of a long period of decline in citizen numbers with profound implications for the economy and the world.
India’s annual population growth has averaged 1.2 percent since 2011 compared to 1.7 percent in the previous 10 years, according to government data.
“India survey findings show that population concerns are seeping into a large proportion of the general public,” UNFPA Representative for India Andrea Wojnar said in a statement.
“Still, population numbers should not trigger concern or cause alarm. Instead, if individual rights and choices are upheld, they should be seen as symbols of progress, development and aspirations.”
