The International Rescue Committee (IRC) condemns and calls for an end to the ongoing fighting in Sudan, Khartoum between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has led to the deaths of nearly 100 people and the abandonment of 1,100 wounded in the clashes.

The attack in Dafur killed four humanitarian workers and seriously injured two others.

Kurt Tjossem, IRC Regional Vice President, East Africa, said: “The killing of humanitarian workers and dozens of Sudanese is unacceptable. Conflict has disrupted humanitarian action where more than a third of the population, an estimated 15 million people including refugees, are experiencing acute food insecurity. Humanitarian actors have the limited ability to enter and operate in areas of ongoing war. The IRC calls on all stakeholders to work without delay to address outstanding issues with a view to achieving lasting, inclusive political peace.”

The IRC has since suspended operations across the country, except in Tunaydbah in Gedaref State, where the team continues to provide lifesaving services to the refugee population.

In Sudan, the IRC supports people affected by conflict and crisis, including women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, refugees, mixed populations and host communities. We provide an integrated health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) program that maintains basic services while actively building local capacity to support services. The IRC also provides child protection services and comprehensive services for the protection and empowerment of women and girls, including victims of gender-based violence (GBV).
