Iran’s leaders have promised Israel “extreme punishment” following the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. However the US has pledged to defend Israel, and Iran will not be in search of a direct confrontation with Washington. All of this factors to Iran’s reluctance to retaliate, argues Trita Parsi, co-founder of the Quincy Institute for Accountable Statecraft.

Parsi tells host Steve Clemons that that is the “most weak” scenario Iran has confronted in years, as Tehran feels pressured to defuse the scenario regardless of trying powerless within the eyes of its allies.
