Ireland’s oldest living woman recently celebrated her 109th birthday and has two tips for enjoying a long life; don’t waste time and live to the fullest.

Máirín Hughes further adds that among her passions are bird watching, reading books, completing crosswords, or other word formation games.

Hughes was born on May 22, 1914, two months before the start of World War I, and remembers her mother caring for people during the 1918 flu pandemic.

Yesterday she celebrated her next birthday with friends and family with a bus ride in Dublin Park, followed by tea at the care home.

Asked by the network Irish Times about the secrets of her longevity, she says: “Live life to the fullest, don’t waste time, I believe these are important.”

Hughes was born in Belfast but grew up in Dublin and Killarney. Among other things, it recalls the military groups of the Anglo-Irish war and the birth of the independent Irish state in 1921.

She remembers how the nursing home where she currently lives was being built 50 years ago. “My mother once asked a boy ‘what is she?’ He replied, ‘Oh, that’s where the rich and the old will live,'” says Hughes. “So I believe that I am rich, rich with the company I have here.”

Currently, the most denied person in the world is the 116-year-old woman María Branyas Morerawho lives in Spain.
