You don’t really know what it’s like to be famous until you’re famous. Everyone is told the stories in the movies: the incredible idols, all the money and attention, the beauty and the clothes, the diamonds and the glamour. This is the dream of fame – but the reality is very different.

She has emphasized that she is also proud of her family heritage. Born Rita Sahatçiu in Pristina, she and her family immigrated to the United Kingdom as refugees when the singer was one year old, living with her four family members in a cramped room in west London.

Her father was a teacher who when they immigrated had to work two shifts to support his children, while her mother was a waitress and studied to become a psychiatrist, surviving two bouts with breast cancer. Rita remembers:

My mother used to say: ‘You are like me, you have my blood in your veins’

Then he added that:

It’s an Eastern European Albanian mentality: whatever happens, get up, keep going and don’t give up. Keep going and keep thriving. /TAR
