MSNBC’s Jen Psaki isn’t buying House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‘s (R-Calif.) claimed to fear that Republican hardliners risk a government shutdown – as early as October 1.
McCarthy complained last week: “This is a whole new concept from individuals who just want to burn the place down.”
“Real?!?” Psaki asked Sunday. “Is it a ‘brand new concept that certain Republicans want to burn the place down’? Well, I have news for you, Speaker McCarthy, if you’ve been sleeping the last few years. The building has been on fire for years.”

Republicans were responsible for the government shutdown in 2013 and 2018-2019, Psaki noted. “And if we really want to talk about burning the entire building down, when the actual Capitol was attacked by a bunch of insurrectionists, Kevin McCarthy and the majority of his party simply waved it away and pledged loyalty to the architect of that chaos. , Donald Trump.”
Former President Donald Trump is “effectively running the House” and “pulling the strings,” Psaki said.
But it was up to McCarthy, who she said had sold his soul to the far-right wing of his party for the speakership, “to solve the problem and put out the fire.”
“The big question now, less than a week away from a possible government shutdown, is whether you can do the work,” she concluded.
