Jon Stewart pointed out where former president Donald Trump is in a “two-tier court system” after Virginia Gov. Glen Youngkin (R) shared his opinion about the 37-count federal indictment from Trump last week.
Youngkin, in the wake of the indictment related to Trump’s handling of classified documents, wrote on Twitter that such a system led to selective prosecution of some people while “others are not” being prosecuted, claiming that parents in Virginia have also been the target of “politically motivated actions”.
Other Republicans have made similar arguments for selective prosecution, including 2024 Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President and 2024 nominee Mike Pence And Representative Bill Johnson (R-Ohio) in response to the indictment.
The host of “The Problem with Jon Stewart” retweeted an excerpt from his show’s coverage noting that he agreed with the idea of a “dual justice system” before teaching the Republican governor about Trump’s place in it.
“Trump has used privilege and wealth to protect himself from legal liability every step of the way,” Stewart said in a clip initially shared in April after Trump’s arraignment on costs related to hush money payments.
“He has lived in space his entire adult life, illegally and unethically. He’s in the line where you get the platinum indictment package – no handcuffs, no mug shot, unlimited fingerprint ink.
Stewart further questioned whether ordinary people surround themselves with a “flesh shield of henchmen to go to jail in their stead.” a nod to Trump associates sentenced to prison.
The former Daily Show host later analyzed the New York State Attorney General’s civil lawsuit against Trump’s now-defunct charitable organization, a lawsuit he had to settle for $2 million.
“Yeah. It’s all selective pursuit and if you’re on the right level, you can do what you want and you’ll probably be fine,” Stewart said.
“In fact, you could even be elected president — twice.”
