“Yellowstone” co-creator Taylor Sheridan revealed that Kevin Costner’s beloved John Dutton will come to an end before the Paramount+ series comes to an end.

Sheridan didn’t reveal exactly how Dutton’s chapter would end, but did clarify some of the rumors about how the “Yellowstone” ending came about in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“My last conversation with Kevin was that he had a passion project that he wanted to direct,” Sheridan revealed. “He and the network argued about when he could finish ‘Yellowstone.

“My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t changed,” Sheridan added. “His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful… and I’ve never had a problem with Kevin that he and I couldn’t solve over the phone. But once lawyers get involved, people can’t talk to others and start saying things that aren’t true and try to shift the blame based on how the press or public seems to react.”

Sheridan continued, “He took a lot of this on the chin and I don’t know if anyone deserves it. His movie seems to be a big priority for him and he wants to shift focus. I really hope (the movie) is worth it it – and that it is a good one.”

Costner stars as John Dutton in the Paramount Network series. The series’ success spawned multiple spin-off shows, including “1923” and “1883,” along with an upcoming show starring Matthew McConaughey.

However, the end of “Yellowstone” after only five seasons has “disappointed” Sheridan.

“It cuts the closure on his character,” he told the outlet. “It doesn’t change it, but it cuts it off.”

Dutton would not be there for the end of “Yellowstone”, and Sheridan claimed that the original script was left unchanged despite the abrupt ending. While the show’s creator didn’t reveal if Costner’s character will be “taken to the train station,” he did give fans a hint as to what won’t happen to the beloved western hero.

“I died in a goddamn car accident!” Sheridan pointed it out, referring to the death of his “Sons of Anarchy” character.

“I don’t do fuck car accidents,” he explained. “Whether (Dutton’s fate) inflates (Costner’s) ego or insults is collateral damage that I don’t consider in relation to storytelling.”

Rumors circulated for months that Costner disagreed with Paramount over the schedule, wanting to spend less time on “Yellowstone” and more time on his personal projects. His most recent is the movie “Horizon: An American Saga”, which will also have three sequels.

Sheridan insists he had nothing to do with the scheduling issue.

“I don’t dictate the schedule. I don’t dictate when things start filming. I don’t dictate when things air,” he explained. “Those decisions are made by people way above me. My sphere of control is the content – that’s it. No production of mine has ever waited for me. Believe me, I begged (for more time) with ‘1883.’ I begged with ‘1923.’ Begged. No, ‘Broadcast Date Locked; for what we pay you, find out.” And I’m not going to stand in a corner and say, ‘I’m not going to do it.'”

The Paramount Network executive told The Hollywood Reporter that Costner had a “very tight time.”

“We had a lead talent that we loved, and (Costner’s) filmed four feature films in a row,” said Chris McCarthy. “This ‘Yellowstone’ chapter is closing faster than we all wanted, but we’re feeling good about where it’s going to end.”

Sheridan also shut down the idea that Costner was unhappy with Dutton’s character arc and that he told the star to “stick to acting.”

“I never had that conversation with Kevin,” Sheridan clarified. “There was a time in season two when he was really upset and said the character wasn’t going in the direction he wanted. I said, ‘Kevin, you remember when I told you this is essentially ‘The Godfather’ .” on the largest ranch in Montana? Are you so surprised that the Godfather kills people?’ What he clung to is (Dutton’s) obligations to his family and way of life. Dutton’s big failure doesn’t evolve with time – he doesn’t find other streams of income (for the farm). Kevin felt season two was a departure from that, and I don’t know if he was wrong. We went back into it in season three.”

Sheridan added, “And I remember he won a Golden Globe last year for his performance, so I think it works.”

The second half of Season 5 of “Yellowstone” is currently scheduled to return in November, but it could be due to the ongoing writers’ strike.
