House Speaker Kevin McCarthy canceled an upcoming event at the U.S. Capitol hosted by Representative Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., that would have labeled Israel a “catastrophe” for the Palestinians and the world.
Tlaib had tried to reserve space in the Captiol Visitor Center to mark the “Nakba,” a Palestinian term for Israel’s founding in 1948, which translates to “catastrophe.” McCarthy called her plans “anti-Semitic” and used his seniority to reserve the event space for himself. The event will instead commemorate Israel’s 75th anniversary, which will land on May 14.
“This event at the Capitol is off,” McCarthy tweeted late Tuesday night. “Instead, I will host a bipartisan discussion in honor of the 75th anniversary of the US-Israel relationship.”
Neither McCarthy’s nor Tlaib’s office immediately responded to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

Tlaib has a long history of attacks on Israel. She derided the country as an “apartheid state” earlier in May, claiming it was based on the “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians.

In the event, Tlaib’s comments were widely rejected on Twitter, where users quickly adopted the “community notes” fact-checking feature.
Israel’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, also told Fox News Digital that the comments were an example of the Democrat’s “anti-Semitic lies.”
“Tlaib’s ignorance and hatred towards the Jewish people and the State of Israel knows no bounds,” Erdan said. “The facts are clear: the Arabs rejected the UN resolution to establish a Jewish state and began a war to exterminate the Jews of Israel.”

McCarthy’s decision to cancel Tlaib’s event comes as Israel’s Iron Dome defense system deflects waves of missiles launched from Gaza on Wednesday morning. The attack came in response to three Israeli airstrikes that killed three senior members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group.
