MOSCOW
The Kremlin said on Thursday that Britain’s decision to supply long-range Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine would require an “adequate response” from Russia.
Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia’s stance on London’s decision was “extremely negative”.
“This will require an adequate response from our military, which, militarily, will naturally make appropriate decisions against this background.”
Storm Shadow is a long-range aviation cruise missile, usually air-launched, jointly developed by Britain and France. The firing range is more than 250 km (more than 155 miles).
Returning to the agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Peskov said that Moscow continues to maintain contacts with Baku and Yerevan, but there are no scheduled phone calls or meetings with the leaders of these countries.
“We expect a measured approach from the parties and urge them not to take any steps that could lead to escalation,” he said.
When asked about the deficit in the Russian budget, Peskov said that the situation in the economy is under control and macroeconomic indicators are good.
Commenting on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to restore the visa-free regime and redirect air traffic with Georgia, Peskov said it was done for humanitarian reasons.
“For a long time, Russian authorities have received calls from citizens of both countries and entrepreneurs of both countries, as well as public associations, academia and cultural figures demanding that these decisions be taken. That’s right, based on humanitarian concerns, it was,” he said.
“I couldn’t go this far yet,” said Peskov, regarding the restoration of diplomatic relations.
He also criticized Washington’s decision to confiscate the assets of Russian entrepreneur Konstantin Malofeev, warning that it would undermine trust in the United States.
