The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, stated that next week he will meet with the European Union’s special envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajçak, and the US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, to discuss about the possibilities for organizing early elections in the municipalities in the north of the country.

In an interview for NBC News, Kurti said that in order to hold the elections, “the thugs who caused the violence must first return to Serbia, or be arrested in Kosovo”, while adding that they must be free and democratic.

“We must be sure to implement the Brussels agreement, which has de-facto recognition. By extension, these thugs, these extremists should return to Serbia or be arrested in Kosovo. And then early elections. The EU should be active in this dialogue. Next week, Lajçak and Escobar will come to Kosovo and we will discuss the details. I believe in early elections, but first we need the rule of law and a fair campaign before the elections”, he declared.

The head of the Government of Kosovo has called for the international community to help the Serbs in Kosovo to be free to exercise their rights.

“People want to be heard, but official Belgrade does not allow them. There is no democracy without political pluralism. The international community must help us so that they are free”, added Kurti.

He stated that the Albanian mayors who have won in the northern municipalities have low legitimacy, but added that they are legal.

“It is clear that the new presidents who won the elections do not have enough legitimacy due to the small participation of voters in the elections. We have called for everyone to participate in the voting, but Belgrade has pressured the Serbian citizens to boycott the April 23 elections”, he declared.
