The man who raped and impregnated a girl nine-year-old in Ohio (USA), who had to travel to another state to have an abortion, was sentenced this Wednesday to life imprisonment.
Gerson Fuentes28, pleaded guilty today to the two crimes of rape that were charged to him by a court in Ohioand must register in a database of sex offendersreported local media.
However, as part of an agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office, Fuentes may request parole when he has served between 25 and 30 years of his sentence.
This case has become relevant at the national level amid greater restrictions on access to abortion in the country, one year after the Supreme Court revoked the legal protection of this procedure.
The minor had to move from Ohio to Indiana for an abortion in late June of last year, after that state banned the abortion from the sixth week of pregnancywith no exceptions for rape or incest.
As of today, and according to data from the Planned Parenthood organization, which has the largest network of reproductive health clinics in the US, access to abortion has been partially or totally eliminated in 20 states, including Texas, FloridaAlabama, Georgia, Kentucky or North Carolina.
By contrast, 25 states and Washington DC have constitutional or legal protections, as occurs in Michigan, New York, Maryland or Colorado. EFE
