With research, analysis and findings across the three countries on the evolving cybersecurity threats in Africa, the report shows that cyberattacks against all major corporations have increased dramatically. Kenyan companies reported an 82% increase in such attacks, while South African companies recorded a 62% increase and Zambian companies recorded a 62% increase.

“The biggest concern emerging from this report is that companies say they have put in place a lot more cybersecurity controls. With threats evolving faster than security systems, companies can’t afford to be complacent,” said David Behr, CEO of Liquid C2. “The report emphasizes that businesses must be consistently vigilant about the ever-evolving cybercrime landscape and the methods malicious actors use to breach cybersecurity measures. As the report shows, complacency is a luxury no one can afford.”

There are reasons to be optimistic; all respondents in the report highlighted that they had made significant progress in their cloud and digital strategies and cybersecurity capabilities. In addition, the majority (68%) of companies interviewed in the survey said they had hired cybersecurity personnel or joined a cybersecurity team in the past year. Kenya had the highest percentage at 82%, followed by South Africa (63%) and Zambia (62%).

But, as Behr says, “This could prove to be a double-edged sword. The research highlights that more than half of all large companies in the three countries were victims of a successful cyber attack, of which 90% were Kenyan companies. Increasingly sophisticated methods such as Cybercrime-as-a-Service (CaaS) are becoming increasingly popular in Africa, meaning companies can no longer rely on outdated technologies and processes. It’s time they invested in a partner that provides 24/7/365 protection, rapid response, threat intelligence and prevention, compliance and enhanced business reputation, all designed to meet the specific needs of businesses.

The most common method of attack by cybercriminals targeting businesses was via email, using phishing or spam attacks (61%), followed by compromised password attacks at 48%, and data breaches and attacks (44%) second and third most common. In addition, 61% of the companies surveyed said their business breaches occurred as a result of remote or hybrid working.

One of the most concerning revelations in the report is that Africa is facing a growing shortfall of 100,000 in the number of certified cybersecurity professionals. Reports estimate there are only 7,000 certified cybersecurity professionals, or one in every 177,000 people on the continent. However, this number may obscure the true magnitude of the problem as there is no readily available data on the level of investment of African governments in cybersecurity.

The report underscores the increasing need for companies to invest in cybersecurity measures to avoid reputational damage, financial loss and potential business disruption. In addition, it reinforces how important it is for organizations to partner with trusted third-party Managed Security Services Providers (MSSPs) to implement and fine-tune their cybersecurity strategies.
