Putin’s spokesman’s overnight statement suggested that the Kremlin viewed the Wagner group’s move to Rostov-on-Don, a key Russian city close to the border with Ukraine, as a “rebellion”.
Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed in an audio message on Friday that his troops would now punish Russia’s Defense Minister and Chief of the General Staff and order other units to withdraw and not offer resistance.
“Special services, law enforcement agencies, namely the Ministry of Defense, the FSB, the Ministry of the Interior, Rosgvardiya, continuously report 24 hours a day to the President on the measures taken within the framework of the implementation of the instructions that been given to him before,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday.
