Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and Emma Coronel were married on July 2, 2007 in a modest ceremony held in the town of La Angostura, Durango, Mexico.
However, a decade later their lives took different paths when the drug lord was arrested for the third time in an operation carried out by the Mexican authorities in Sinaloa.
After being extradited to the United States, “El Chapo” Guzmán was the protagonist of the so-called “Trial of the Century” in the Court of Brooklyn, New York, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment in a maximum security prison.
During this media trial, the then head of the Sinaloa Cartel and Emma Coronel met again after several years away due to their capture and starred in a peculiar scene.
According to a story reconstructed by Univisión, this long-awaited meeting took place when the former beauty queen entered the eighth floor of the Eastern District of New York to attend the resolution of the trial against her husband.

Emma Coronel sat in the front row during this meeting and was placed on the right side of the room, behind the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officers who guarded and escorted “El Chapo” throughout his extradition process.
Approximately 15 minutes later, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán entered this room guarded by two bailiffs because, at that time, he was facing 17 criminal charges for crimes related to drug trafficking and money laundering.

Once he entered the room where he would be sentenced to life imprisonment, the dangerous drug trafficker searched the entire place with his eyes and, seeing Emma Coronel sitting, his face changed completely.
After hearing his sentence, “El Chapo” Guzmán, who at that time was already wearing a prisoner’s uniform, was escorted by the guards to take him back to prison.

However, he shared a loving look with Emma Coronel and without exchanging a single word he left the room, this being the last in-person meeting between the two.
