Los Angeles City Council members on Friday pushed for an investigation into the transportation of migrants brought into the city from Texas this week, days after local lawmakers passed a motion directing the city to draft a “sanctuary city” ordinance .

Councilman Eunisses Hernandez along with Councilors Nithya Raman, Monica Rodriguez and Hugo Soto-Martinez filed a motion to direct the City Attorney’s Office to conduct the investigation into whether human trafficking and kidnapping were committed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

A resolution was also filed calling on Los Angeles County Attorney George Gascón, California State Attorney General Rob Bonta, and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to conduct similar investigations into possible crimes committed during the “political stunt”. FOX Los Angeles reported.

“This competition between Republican governors to see who can be more racist demonstrates their total failure to govern effectively,” Soto-Martínez said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “These families deserve full investigation and accountability for any criminal acts or misdeeds committed by Greg Abbott and his government.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to council members.

The request came days after 42 migrants arrived in Los Angeles from the Texas-Mexico border. Texas has transported thousands of migrants from the state to “sanctuary” jurisdictions as part of a campaign to bring attention to the southern border and help border towns often burdened with providing resources.

“Small border towns in Texas remain overrun and overwhelmed as Biden refuses to secure the border,” Abbott said in a Wednesday press release. “LA is a city that migrants want to move to, especially now that its leaders have approved self-declared refugee status.”

Other cities such as Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington DC have received illegal immigrants from Texas.

In a statement, LA Mayor Karen Bass criticized Abbott, saying he “uses people as pawns in his cheesy politics.”

“Shortly after I took office, I directed city services to begin planning in case Los Angeles fell victim to a despicable stunt that Republican governors have become so fond of,” she said in a statement.

Rodriguez, the counsel, said Abbott’s actions were an “insult to the ideals of America that my father and so many of our nation’s military fought for.”

“Unfortunately, these acts show the worst political exploitation of vulnerable families by a politician clearly incapable of offering compassionate or thoughtful solutions,” she added.

Last week, the council passed a motion directing the city to pass a “sanctuary city” ordinance. The ordinance would prohibit city resources, property, or personnel from being used for federal immigration enforcement.
