In an interview about Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Mark Milley said on “60 Minutes” Wednesday that he will take “appropriate measures” to ensure he and his family are safe in the wake of recent comments from former President Trump.
Milley’s words come after one Truth Social Post from Trump last week He called the chairman a “Woke train wreck” and accused him of treason, which appears to allude to calls from Milley to China for reassurance at the end of Trump’s term.
“This is an act so egregious that in the past it would have been punishable by death!” Read Trump’s message. “A war between China and the United States could have resulted from this treacherous act. To be continued!!!”
“I have taken adequate security measures,” the military leader said in response to a question from CBS CEO Norah O’Donnell about his security concerns.
Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said this his concerns Monday about retaliation by the former president against people he fell out with — like Milley — when he returns to office, calling them “legitimate.”
“Look, I think it’s a legitimate fear,” Esper told CNN host Kaitlan Collins. “If you remember from my memoirs… I quote a circumstance where (Trump), urged by his closest advisers, wanted to recall Admiral McRaven and General McChrystal to active duty to have them court-martialed for some of the things they allegedly said in the public domain, and Milley and I had to dissuade the President from doing that for a variety of reasons.
“The president also said a second term would be about retaliation, right? So I think these are all legitimate concerns,” he later added.
