A group of millionaires calling for higher taxes on the wealthy were challenged on Tuesday to commit to paying the higher tax rates they supported.
Stephen Moore, a Heritage Foundation fellow and co-founder of the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, confronted Patriotic Millionaires, a group of wealthy Americans calling for higher tax rates on the wealthy, at the group’s Tax Day press conference held in partnership with various members of Congress.
“We were hoping that each of you would sign this pledge, which says you will pay 90% in taxes, just as you subscribe today, because you say it is your patriotic duty to do so,” said Moore when he approached Morris Pearl . , president of Patriotic Millionaires, on stage. “And so I hope that each of you will sign this pledge that I am willing to pay 90% tax.”
“So let me understand, you want me to do that individually, or you want me to do that as part of the policy?” asked Stephen Prince, vice president of Patriotic Millionaires, as Moore handed out petitions for members to sign.

Pearl then stepped in, saying they want to “change the system”, while Moore was ushered to the conference side. Abigail Disney, heiress to the Walt Disney fortune, then said they want to “change the law”.

“Don’t you think it’s your patriotic duty to pay more taxes?” Moore asks.

During the Biden administration, Democrats worked to introduce a wealth tax that would raise the rates paid by businesses and wealthy Americans.
The Patriotic Millionaires press conference highlighted the economic need for higher taxes on the wealthy, with Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., Tax Day “one of the most segregated, most unequal, and one of the most unjust days of the year in America.”
