The regional ministerial for energy met today in Tepelena with the presence of the ministers of the five Balkan countries as well as the main leaders of the European Energy Council, where Albania is currently holding the next presidency.
The meeting focused on the preliminary phase of discussions of a draft proposal that suggests limiting carbon emissions with environmental and economic benefits. Along with other criteria, this is a prerequisite for the membership of all candidate countries in the EU.
Regarding this standard, according to the initial analysis, Albania is the most advantaged country due to the use of clean energy on a large scale. But the challenges still remain numerous for all the countries of the region. The Minister of Economy of North Macedonia Mr. Kreshnik Bekteshi said that the implementation of this standard will be challenging for the economy, but the process will take its time and the country will prepare to use its potential in the field of renewable energy.
Deputy the general director of the European Emergency Secretariat commented on the meeting in Albania and especially in the South near Vjosa, which was recently declared a national park, a very positive aspect for Albania. She also added that the standards for reducing carbon emissions do not only presuppose restrictions but also a better quality of life, a cleaner environment and an increase in jobs.
“It is an informal meeting but on a very important issue such as the transition of clean energy and the challenge of climate change. I believe that all participating countries at ministerial level have had the will to discuss how we can become more efficient with energy, how to have it clean, renewable and affordable because as you know we had a big energy crisis last year past. As you know, there were discussions yesterday about Albania’s possible accession to the EU, and energy is a preliminary area. Albania is doing a very good job when it comes to clean energy and in the natural aspect it is being worked on as 30% of the country is occupied by protected parks and finally Vjosa a protected park are important advantages for Albania”, he said. Mechthild Wörsdörfer.
The secretariat holds four annual meetings and the ministerial of Albania was in the framework of the preparatory phase for the November meeting when it will be discussed in more concrete terms of time and action plan for each country.
