Khartoum, Sudan
The death toll in the ongoing clashes between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan has risen to 528, the Ministry of Health said on Saturday.
In the statement made by the ministry, it was stated that 4 thousand 599 people were injured in the violence that took place between April 15-27.
The ministry had previously reported the death toll as 512 and 4,193 injured due to the ongoing violence.
According to the ministry, clashes took place between two warring rivals in 12 of Sudan’s 18 states.
Clashes broke out again on Saturday, despite a 3-day ceasefire between the Sudanese army and RSF fighters.
RSF claimed in a statement that it shot down a military plane in Khartoum’s twin city of Omdurman.
There was no statement from the Sudanese army regarding the claim.
Thousands, including foreigners, have left Sudan since violence erupted between the two rivals clashing on April 15.
In recent months there has been a disagreement between the military and paramilitaries over military security reform. The reform envisages the full participation of the RSF in the military, which is one of the main issues of negotiations between the international and regional parties for the transition to a civilian, democratic government in Sudan.
In Sudan, the military has had no functioning government since October 2021, when Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok dismissed the transitional government and declared a state of emergency in a move described by political forces as a “coup.”
Sudan’s transition period, which began in August 2019, was scheduled to end with elections in early 2024.
