A man suspected of domestic violence shot and then killed a police officer at a southern Indiana hospital Monday morning, authorities said.

The confrontation took place at Perry County Memorial Hospital in Tell City, across the Ohio River from Kentucky. Police were called when a domestic violence victim told hospital staff that Sean Hubert was on his way.

Tell City Sgt. Heather Glenn tried to restrain 34-year-old Hubert in the hospital with an electronic device and arrest him, but was unsuccessful, Indiana police said.

“During a brief struggle, Hubert pulled out a firearm and Sergeant Glenn was shot,” state police said. “Officers from the Tell City Police Department and the Cannelton Police Department returned fire and shot Hubert.”

The shooting took place at the hospital, near the emergency room, Sgt. John Davis told The Associated Press.

“They didn’t know he was armed,” Davis said.

Glenn had spent nearly 20 years with the Tell City Police Department and the Perry County Sheriff’s Office.

“Our precinct has suffered a huge loss,” said Chief of Police Derrick Lawalin. “We have lost a dear colleague, a dear friend. Sergeant Glenn – she’s a cornerstone of our department.’

Lawalin also offered “thoughts and prayers” for Hubert’s family.

Glenn and other officers were looking for Hubert after speaking with the domestic violence victim on Sunday, state police said.

Tell City, with a population of 7,500, is located 150 miles south of Indianapolis.

It was the second death of an Indiana police officer in less than a week. State Trooper Aaron Smith was hit by a stolen vehicle on Wednesday as he attempted to deflate tires on the road in suburban Indianapolis. An 18-year-old man was charged with murder.
