Yenifher Herrera Arévalo, alias “la Patrona”, has been pointed out by the Public Ministry (MP) this Thursday, May 25 during a first statement hearing of having contacted a hired assassin at the end of 2022 to attack a mayoral candidate .
“The lady is bad and she doesn’t like that you don’t do your job,” the prosecutor described, paraphrasing part of one of the conversations that she says took place between Herrera Arévalo’s collaborators to coordinate the assassination of Luis Eduardo Ayala Pineda, current candidate for the mayor’s office of Sayaxché, Petén.
According to the accusation, Herrera Arévalo’s collaborators in November and December 2022 were contacting a hit man to attack Ayala Pineda, who is running for the La Cabra civic committee.
The recording of the wiretaps was part of the initial evidence that was presented during the hearing in the Tenth Pluripersonal Court of First Criminal Instance, which was held behind closed doors, although the case was later lifted.
wiretapping
The Narcoactivity Prosecutor’s Office, in charge of the investigation, explained that the telephone conversations suggest that the group acted under the guidelines of Herrera Arévalo and was analyzing how to attack Ayala Pineda because he was a “target” that “annoyed a lot.”
A tax agent explained that in one of the wiretaps it is evident that the organized group considered that hiring a hit man would not be enough and then they would plan to integrate an armed group of 25 people to commit the crime, because “the objective” had security.

In addition, the agent described when one of the suspects would signal the right time to go after Mr. Ayala. “He was going to be drunk and from there he cannot be saved,” the prosecutor described the content of another of the wiretaps recorded between December 22 and 23, 2022.
Reference was also made to the payments that would have been offered to attack the candidate, which the prosecution assumes would be figures between Q50 thousand and Q60 thousand.
One of those linked, fulfilling the mandate of Herrera Arévalo, pointed out in those conversations, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, that the offer to a hitman was that “if (the candidate) fell at once, as the Patron had said, the money would fall ”.
They capture “la Patrona”
Herrera Arévalo, 25, was arrested last Thursday, May 11, in an operation by anti-drug forces.
The authorities then indicated that alias “La Patrona” was captured on charges of illicit association and conspiracy to murder, linked to a drug cartel.
The General Subdirectorate for the Analysis of Anti-Narcotics Information (SGAIA) investigated Herrera as the leader of a cell of the Sayaxché cartel, which operates in the north of the country.
According to the investigative unit, the job of the accused was to coordinate landings of aircraft loaded with cocaine, for which, together with her accomplices, they set up illegal runways on farms for the arrival of small planes or jets, to unload the drug that was later moved to Mexican territory.
The arrest of alias “la Patrona” caused a stir because a week before it became effective, presidential candidate Carlos Pineda had publicly denounced that they wanted to assassinate him and pointed to a woman under the same alias as responsible.
Regarding the link between the defendant and Pineda’s complaint, neither the MP nor the PNC have confirmed it.
