MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan lashed out after his tweet about racist crime statistics on Friday was fact-checked by Twitter’s community notes.
Hasan shared an excerpt from his show criticizing HBO host Bill Maher for his comments about the crime spiraling out of control in places like Chicago and the Democratic Party not doing much to fix it and for the media not being there talk about.
“White people are killing other white people at almost the same rate that black people are killing other black people and yet you never hear anyone complain about ‘white on white crime’. These are not points of wisdom from Maher. They are classic racist dog whistles,” he tweeted Hassan.
Shortly after his tweet, Twitter’s Community Notes feature fact-checked the post by linking to it FBI Crime Statistics from 2019, which showed that Black on Black crime was proportionally higher than White on White crime.
According to 2019 FBI statistics, there were 2594 white to white homicides and 2574 black to black homicides. In 2019, the white population in the US was 60.1% of the total population. Black was 12.2%. The number of homicides per capita was thus much higher in the black-on-black group,” the community note said.

“Read the community comments on this,” the conservative duo, the Hodgetwins, posted alongside a laughing emoji.
Author and commentator Ryan James Girdusky told Hasan, “You could get a job as a farmhand since you’re so good at picking cherries.”
“*Rate* and *frequency* are two very different things, @mehdirhasan, and you know that. That’s why almost 50% of murder victims are black or black despite representing only 14% of the population,” replied David Freiheit, podcast host of Viva Frei. . “You are a professional liar.”

Hasan responded to the backlash with a quote from a USA Today article.
“White-on-white and black-on-black homicide rates are similar, at around 80% and 90%. In general, most homicides in the United States are intraracial, and white-on-white rates and black-on-black murders are similar,” he tweeted.
Again, the Twitter community’s comments have been fact-checked on this post, writing: “The black-on-black homicide rate (53.38/million) was ~5.3x higher than that of white-on-white (10.03/million) in the US in 2019, according to FBI and Census Bureau data. Black murderers killed 89% of black victims. White murderers killed 79% of white victims.”

Hasan subsequently denounced the Community Notes feature as a right-wing weapon.
“If you had any doubts that @CommunityNotes has become another right wing weapon on Musk’s Twitter, check out the BS community comment added to my Bill Maher clip, after MAGA folks requested it,” he wrote. “It makes a point that is irrelevant to the point I’m making (on intraracial homicide rates.)”
Twitter’s Community Notes feature fact-checked him for the third time, citing rules in Twitter’s official Community Notes page.
“Community Notes does not operate by majority rules. To identify notes that are useful to a wide range of people, notes need agreement between contributors who sometimes disagreed with their previous assessments. This helps prevent one-sided assessments,” it said.
