Police also charged them with five other armed robberies that same evening, a carjacking and, in Breeland’s case, felony possession of a firearm. Prosecutors said all four had long criminal records and none of them had a job or completed high school.
Brooks, the suspected triggerman, told police he shot Preston when he saw her reach for her service weapon, prosecutors said.
Preston returned fire and returned two shots before being hit in the face and neck, prosecutors revealed in court.
Preston is remembered for her kindness, intellect and dedication to service. She had recently received her master’s degree in jurisprudence from the Loyola School of Law.

Johnson inherited a city that has experienced unprecedented gun violence in recent years, and it’s unclear how or if he’ll be able to fight it. During his campaign, he promised to hire 200 more Chicago Police Department detectives to solve the revolving door of cases.
