NASA leaders present replace on Boeing’s stranded Starliner astronauts

NASA leaders are delivering a briefing on a pair of astronauts who’ve been caught on the Worldwide House Station since June after a malfunction on their Boeing spacecraft.

NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams arrived on a Starliner car on June 5 and have been solely supposed to remain till the center of the month.

Authorities have been discussing tips on how to safely return them house after discovering helium leaks and propulsion issues.

One beforehand mentioned choice was sending them house on the NASA SpaceX Crew-9 mission, which might take off in September with two empty seats, leaving room for Wilmore and Williams on the February 2025 return, authorities mentioned final week.

If the company approves a contingency plan, officers say they’ll doubtless have Starliner undock from the area station and return to earth autonomously.

Boeing mentioned it was assured that the Starliner is protected sufficient to carry Wilmore and Williams again to Earth safely. 

NASA says it wants extra time to research the spacecraft’s maneuvering thrusters, which developed issues throughout its first astronaut-crewed flight to the ISS.
