Mayor Eric Adams was booed Friday at a City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law graduation ceremony after referring to his history as a police officer.

As Adams gave a short speech to the crowd, dozens of students started screaming as he talked about his previous service with the New York Police Department (NYPD).

The mayor was an officer for 22 years and graduated from the New York City Police Academy in 1984.

“These graduates that are here are now going into the legal field, some are going to make policies for health care, some are going to work with the elected officials to legislate, some are going to go further and even fulfill the role of what it is to to be a public figure,” Adams said during his speech.

“Let’s be clear, 22 years of my life I wore a body armor and protected the children and families of this city as a police officer,” he added, as the crowd booed.

“So I know what it is. I know what it takes to keep this city together. And we have a lot of challenges, a lot of things that need discipline,” Adams continued.

The student protests come as the city grapples with the murder of Jordan Neely last week on a subway. Daniel Penny, the Navy veteran who choked Neely while he was behaving erratically, was charged Friday.

The NYPD was criticized for releasing Penny without charge after the incident. Protesters and the NYPD clashed during demonstrations last week.

CUNY Law’s speech wasn’t the first time Adams had been booed in public. During a Brooklyn Pride parade last June, Adams was mobbed by attendees who reportedly shouted profanity and waved him off with the middle finger.
