NEW YORK — The NFL suspended five players on Friday for violating the league’s gambling policy.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety CJ Moore and Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney were suspended indefinitely, while Lions wide receivers Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams were suspended for six games.
Cephus, Moore and Toney are suspended indefinitely until at least the end of the 2023 season for betting on NFL games in the 2022 season, and may petition for reinstatement at the end of the 2023 season.
Berryhill and Williams were suspended for betting from an NFL facility on non-NFL games. They are eligible to participate in all off-season and pre-season activities, including pre-season games, and their suspensions will take effect upon the roster being permanently shortened.
In a press release, the NFL said a “league review revealed no evidence that inside information had been used or that a game had been compromised in any way.”
The Lions released Cephus and Moore on Friday.
Detroit Lions executive vice president and general manager Brad Holmes said in a statement that the players “displayed decision-making that is inconsistent with our organizational values and in violation of league rules.”
Holmes also said the team will work with Stanley and Jameson “to make sure they understand the seriousness of these infractions and have clarity on future league rules.”
The commanders said in a statement that the team has “fully cooperated with the NFL’s investigation since the notice was received and supports the league’s findings and actions.”
