Former Attorney General Eric Holder questioned whether President Biden or the 2024 presidential winner might need to pardon former President Donald Trump if convicted of federal charges.
“I think I’d tell the president, the next attorney general, to let the system do its job. Try things, see what the results are. And then treat that convicted president, or anyone else who’s been convicted, like any other person,” Holder, who served as an AG under the Obama administration, said Sunday on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.”
Former President Donald Trump was indicted last month on federal charges related to willful withholding of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice and false statements. Trump pleaded not guilty and dismissed the allegations as a “witch hunt”. Trump also pleaded not guilty to state charges in New York in April over allegations of falsifying business records related to hush money payments during the 2016 election season.
“Pardons are generally for people who have repented and then done things that show they changed their lives,” Holder continued.

“If those kinds of determinations can be made in relation to the former president, or anyone else who has been convicted, yes, I would support that. In the absence of such a thing, I don’t think it would be a wise thing to do,” he concluded.
Trump, the GOP frontrunner for the 2024 election, and Republican allies have quashed the series of charges in the latest “witch hunt” against him.

“The ludicrous and baseless charge against me by the armed Department of Injustice of the Biden administration will go down as one of the most heinous abuses of power in the history of our country,” Trump said at the Georgia Republican Convention last month. . “This vicious persecution is a mockery of justice.”

“They have launched one witch hunt after another to try and stop our movement,” he added. “They’re not coming after me, they’re coming after you.”

Other Republican candidates who have thrown their hats into the 2024 presidential ring recently indicated they would likely pardon Trump if he is actually convicted and if they win the White House, including Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy and Larry Elder. Other GOP candidates have openly said they are unlikely to pardon Trump if elected, including Chris Christie, Will Hurd and Asa Hutchinson.

In May, Biden laughed off a question from Fox News’ Peter Doocy about whether he might pardon the former president.
