President Joe Biden gave his first speech to the nation from the Oval Office on Friday night to celebrate a “crisis averted” by agreeing to a bipartisan measure to avoid government bankruptcy — and the reactions to the speech and the bill themselves are about as divided as the country itself. Not that there weren’t many Biden fans online.
“Kevin McCarthy went to the White House to negotiate with ‘Sleepy Joe Biden,’ but he met Dark Brandon instead. Dark Brandon woke up his ass! wrote one Twitter userreferring to the liberal meme depicting Biden as a supernaturally powerful politician.
While another responded to criticism from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis:Hey little manCan you name any of these failures President Biden supposedly had? Because what the majority of the country is seeing is a man doing an incredible job of repairing the damage of the fourth failed Republican administration in a row since 1980.”
Here are a few of the many other pro-Biden tweets:
But their praise was received by some naysayers who still took low blows about Biden’s age.
With the debt ceiling bill passed by the Senate, Biden will sign it into law Saturday, just two days before the Treasury Department warned the country would default. The agreement raises the debt limit to 2025 and gives lawmakers fiscal targets for the next two years.
“It was crucial to approve this budget agreement. The stakes couldn’t have been higher,” Biden said, adding, “Nothing could have been more catastrophic” than the country’s debt defaulting.
Experts on both sides of the aisle were critical of the Biden-McCarthy deal, with all sides saying lawmakers were negotiating too far away.
