The Ontario Provincial Police has issued a public safety alert for the city of Renfrew following a deadly shooting late Friday night.
One person died in the shooting. The suspect is still not in custody, police said.
Public safety warning. On May 19, 2023, in the late evening, a shooting took place in the town of Renfrew. One victim died. The suspect is not in custody. Be aware of the high police presence. Investigation is ongoing. Follow media updates. ^ br
Renfrew Mayor Tom Sidney said some people in the city are frightened and concerned after hearing of the shooting, adding that there are concerns about “increasing gun violence” in the area.
“From my perspective, we don’t tolerate violence and really enough is enough,” he said. “You want to make sure everyone is safe and protected and not living in fear.”
There is a heavy police presence in the area and an investigation is underway.
Renfrew is located about 100 miles west of downtown Ottawa.
