Global Courant
As we mentioned in previous articles, infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse. In the US alone, it results in over 5 million couples and many times more in the world. Not knowing about treatments, only 10% seek help from professional specialists. We’ve spent most of our time in this series discussing conventional and Chinese medicine in treating fertility. I believe this is the best time to change the subject by discussing how to treat female infertility with herb dang gui (dong quai).
I. Definition
Angelica is a biennial plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. The root (angilica root), also known as dang qui or gong quai, is used in traditional Chinese medicine as a reproductive enhancing drug in combination with other herbs such as astragalus to treat exhaustion from blood loss.
II. How Angelica Root (Dang Qui) Affects Women’s Fertility
1. Tonic for reproductive organs
Traditional Chinese medicine considers angelica roots as a royal herb that has been used to improve the productive system and promote menstrual health. Angelica roots are said to have the power to restore any deficiency caused by hormonal imbalance.
2. Blood tonic
It is also a reproductive blood enhancing herb that not only helps increase blood production to replace blood loss for women with heavy periods, but also increases blood flow to the abdominal region, leading to a higher chance of fertility.
3. Digestive System
In addition to helping cure diarrhea, it also boosts the digestive system in absorbing essential vitamins and minerals, reducing the risk of infertility due to nutrient deficiency.
4. Blood and qi deficiency
Blood and qi deficiency in the reproductive region can be caused by blood and qi stagnation in the liver, kidneys, or elsewhere in the body, leading to irregular menstrual cycles, missed periods, or painful periods. Angelica roots help increase blood and qi flow, which results in normalizing the function of reproductive organs.
5. Kidney tonic
Angelica root is also said to help improve kidney function, not only regulating water and moisture through urine extraction, but also improving normal kidney function in regulating the natural menstrual process of the reproductive organs, resulting in a higher chance of fertility.
6. Immune system
Angelica root is said to contain several chemicals that help strengthen the immune system in fighting infection and inflammation, reducing the risk of yeast infection during menstruation and irregular cell growth in the reproductive organs.
III. Side effects
1. it can cause skin inflammation and rashes if taken in high doses
2. Since angelica root causes contraction of the uterus, a pregnant woman should not use it unless with the permission of her herbalist.
