The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Monday, July 3, 2023, commissioned phase three of the Five District Water Supply Project at Adaklu in the Volta Region, a project for which he mowed the sod in September 2020.
The project, funded by a concession facility from Raiffeisen Bank International AG of Austria, at a cost of €11.5 million, will benefit approximately 89,150 people in 95 communities in Central Tongu, Adaklu and Agotime-Ziope.
According to President Akufo-Addo, addressing a gathering in Adaklu, some of the key parts of the project are the construction of three (3) concrete tanks in Adaklu Kpeleho, Adaklu Sofa and Adaklu Kpatove, to protect the water from any bacteria; the completion of a water booster station in Adaklu Kpeleho to transport water to the communities of Adaklu and Agotime-Ziope; and the construction of one hundred and seventy-five (175) kilometers of water mains.
With designs for phase IV of the project underway, the president told the meeting that the government’s focus is to ensure that all regions across the country are provided with adequate, safe, affordable and reliable water services.
“We are also committed to ensuring that we implement safe sanitation and hygiene by 2030, consistent with achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. Our strategic goal is to use a multifaceted approach , with an emphasis on governance and institutional strengthening of the sector, to accelerate access to equitable WASH services across Ghana,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo noted that his administration has made significant progress towards the goal of providing clean water and sanitation for everyone.
He mentioned the commissioning, in September 2020, of completed projects under the Ghana-Spain Debt Swap Development Water Supply Improvement Project, carried out by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), at a total cost of US $3, 78 million, for a beneficiary population of 75,000.
“That project aims to expand and ensure access to sustainable services in thirty-six (36) rural and small towns/communities in Ho, Ho West, Agotime-Ziope and South Dayi counties. The excellent works are expected to be completed by March next year,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo continued: “Again, on June 30, 2020, I also commissioned Cluster Water Systems from Bontrase and Amasamkrom in the Central Region, as part of the Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project (SRWSP). These commissioning ceremonies were held to symbolize the completion of similar water systems implemented in eleven (11) of the country’s sixteen (16) regions, and it was funded by a US$47.5 million credit facility from the International Development Association (IDA). of the World Bank.”
The other favored regions, he stressed, were Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Western, Western North, Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper West and Upper East.
The project components. He added, among others, the construction of water supply systems, support for the construction of domestic latrines, education in health and hygiene, and environmental and social safeguards for one hundred and sixty-four (164) beneficiary communities, with a total population of 154,826.
Under the Rural Communities and Small Towns Water Supply Project (RCSTWSP), the government is improving access to sustainable water supplies in the Volta, Oti, Greater Accra, Ashanti and Eastern Regions for a total population of approximately two hundred and eighty-two thousand (282,000 ), at thirty million euros (€30 million). The project is ongoing and approximately seventeen percent (17%) has been completed.
Urban Communities – “Water for All”
Concerning the “Water for All” agenda in urban communities, the president stated that the Keta Water Supply Project, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources through the Ghana Water Company Limited, will also improve the reliability and sustainability of the water supply to a beneficiary population of approximately 422,160 in Keta and surrounding communities, at an estimated cost of €85,112,854.
Work on this project, he said, is expected to be completed by December 2024.
In addition, the Wenchi Water Project, which is being built at a cost of €39 million, includes the construction of a new water treatment plant and the restoration of the existing groundwater system to meet the current and future water needs of the community until 2045.
“The project is expected to serve about 101,870 people in Wenchi and its environs,” he said.
On the Sekondi-Takoradi Water Supply Project, which would cost about €70 million and serve a beneficiary population of about 1.4 million within the Sekondi-Takoradi communities, President Akufo-Addo stated that the project is expected to be completed by September 2025. will be completed. .
“The feasibility studies for the proposed Sogakope-Lome transboundary water supply project are ninety-eight percent (98%) complete and funding would be sought to achieve sustainable improvements in access to drinking water for four million consumers in the project area. In Ghana, the project beneficiaries will include the South Volta area, specifically the municipal/districts of Keta, Ketu South, Ketu North, South Tongu and Akatsi South,” he added.
