Have you ever woken up from your sleep feeling more tired than ever? Have you had about eight hours of sleep that doesn’t seem as restful as you’d like? Do you even have that mid-morning or mid-afternoon urge to take a nap out of the blue? Chances are you’ve developed a sleep disorder called Intrusive Sleep Apnea.

Intrusive sleep apnea and the layman

Intrusive sleep apnea is a well-known sleep disorder distinguished by the pauses in breathing during a person’s sleep. A person unconsciously misses one or a few breaths with a minimum of ten seconds for each interval. This makes the person feel rather tired even after waking up.

Please note, anyone can suffer from this sleep problem. Common symptoms of this sleep disorder include loud snoring, restless sleep, and the inadvertent sudden daytime sleepiness. Other symptoms include morning headaches, irritability and/or mood swings, learning and/or memory problems, and so on. Therefore, if you feel that you are suffering from these symptoms, it is wise to consult your doctor to have you undergo diagnostic tests such as polysomnography.

A common treatment used to alleviate or remove this obvious health problem is the use of CPAP nasal masks.

CPAP and sleep apnea

A CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) device is a method of ventilation. Although its predecessor, PAP (Positive Airway Pressure) is mainly used in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of hospitals, it is actually used in the treatment of sleep disorders such as Obtrusive Sleep Apnea.

A CPAP machine is also known as a respironics mask, nasal pillow, sleep apnea mask.

Properly calibrated, CPAP nasal masks release regulated but pressurized air into the patient’s lungs so they breathe on time and regularly during their sleep. This limits the chance of breathing pauses during the patient’s sleep and ensures that they have a good night’s sleep as much as possible.

CPAP nasal masks: available and serviceable?

Like all medical equipment, these CPAP nasal masks are subjectively available to the general public. Subjective because there are some countries that allow easy access to these devices and there are countries that require at least a prescription from your doctor. These devices aren’t cheap either, so if you’re prescribed to use one, think about the long-term goals of this treatment. That is, see if it is possible to rent or buy it and if it will serve you best during treatment.

Also, like most medical equipment, these CPAP nasal masks are easy to maintain. If you want to maximize both your treatment and your use of this device, it is recommended that you perform not only daily maintenance, but also weekly to check for “wear and tear” from regular use.

Prevention is better than cure with CPAP nasal masks

Do you really want to walk to work like you had a rough night? Do you really want to fall asleep in the middle of an important meeting just because your eight hours of sleep doesn’t seem as “sufficient” as it should be? Do you really want to catch yourself sleeping behind the wheel while driving home from work? Of course not.

Unfortunately, there is no way to treat sleep apnea other than using CPAP nasal masks. So if you think you may be suffering from this sleep disorder, talk to your doctor. The more you are treated for this sleep problem, the more likely you are to remove or alleviate it and those annoying symptoms mentioned above.
