A group of University of Chicago students continue their campaign to have their university pay more than $1 billion in reparations to Chicago’s South Side.
University of Chicago Against Displacement (UCAD), an anti-gentrification sorority, hosted an open house event Thursday.
“Come to our open house for some food, music and good conversation!” read the group’s Instagram post. “This week we are going to make and color our own zines :)”
According to the University of Chicago Library, a zine is “a self-published (fanzine) … produced in short runs.”

In February, the club had sought $1 billion in reparations in the form of “truly affordable, long-term housing” grants from the university board. The organization believes that the money should be given to the south side of the city for 20 years to prevent displacement.
“The university exists as a legacy of chattel slavery,” said UCAD’s Chicago Maroon Opinion. “In addition, it has actively participated in segregation, redlining and support developments that work to isolate the university from its neighbors and put Southsiders at risk of being driven from their homes.”

The group also advocated for a $20 million annual fund for rent assistance, expanding low-income housing, and supporting STEM programs in local schools.
“This is especially critical at this time as the Obama Center in Jackson Park is increasing land values and therefore rents,” UCAD wrote in a press release.
“As residents deal with the economic hardship and an exacerbation of the homelessness crisis caused by COVID-19, these rent increases will only serve to further displace Southside residents,” it added.

A University of Chicago spokesperson told Fox News Digital in February that the university is helping Chicago’s South Side by supporting businesses, offering free college-ready programs and employing more than 13,000 Chicago residents.
UCAD and the University of Chicago did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital for this story.
