Chaotic security footage was released today by Atlanta police showing protesters chasing police officers pelting them with fireworks and other objects at a sprawling training facility.
At least 35 people were arrested Sunday night during the violent protest against the sprawling training center and officials’ deteriorating relationship with the community.
Police said “violent agitators” launched a coordinated attack on officers and set fire to construction equipment at the plant.
The police station has been the subject of protests in the past, as in January one protester was killed during an incident with the police, and another was seriously injured.
Several arrests were made last year as police dismantled tents erected around the camp after protesters threw bottles and rocks at law enforcement vehicles.
Local police chief Darin Schierbaum said that such actions are a violation of the law.
“It’s a violent attack, it’s not a protest but a criminal activity as firecrackers and Molotov cocktails were fired at the officers,” he said.
The police training center is being built on about 30 acres in the DeKalb community and has been the subject of strong opposition since the proposal was launched in 2021.
