Jamie Lee Rattray scored the shootout winner and Canada survived a wild American comeback to win 4-3 at the Women’s Hockey World Cup on Monday.
The Canadians looked set for an easy win after Laura Stacey scored an empty netter to put the team on a 3-1 win just over two minutes left.

After Canada blew a 3-1 lead late in the third inning, Rattray ended a long shootout to take the Americans down.
But, of course, games between these two cannot end without drama. And so the drama sets in.
Shortly after Stacey’s goal, American Hilary Knight scored to cut the deficit in half, but there was one problem: the scoreboard stopped working.
Confusion ensued. Canadian goalkeeper Ann-Renée Desbiens immediately pointed to the empty, defective clock. After a long delay, it was announced that Canada was challenged for offside. Meanwhile, the clock showed one minute and 18 seconds.
After an even longer wait, the referees came out of the video booth and signaled that the goal counted. On the scoreboard, the time was changed to 39 seconds.
That was all the Americans needed. Amanda Kessel tied the game with 3.5 seconds left, stunning the CAA Center crowd and sending the game to OT.

Despite each team getting a power play opportunity, the five-minute three-on-three overtime didn’t resolve anything.
In the shootout, Knight and Canada’s Brianne Jenner each scored on the first shot. Then the goalkeepers took over and no one else found the back of the net until Rattray in the eighth round.
Canada heads Group A
Once the dust settled, Canada sealed first place in Group A with a perfect 4-0 record. The US finished second 3-1.
Both teams will return to the ice on Thursday for the quarter-finals, where they will each play against Germany, Sweden or Hungary. The semifinals are Saturday and medal matches are on Sunday.
Before the frenzy, Hannah Bilka put the Americans on the board first and perfectly placed a power play shot over the shoulder of Canadian goalkeeper Ann-Renée Desbiens in the first period.
Canada’s Sarah Fillier responded later in the frame, jabbing her own rebound off the side of the net to tie the score.

The Americans then spent most of the mid-frame in the penalty area. Less than three minutes later, Canada capitalized on a five-on-three chance as captain Marie-Philip Poulin hit a slapshot from the top of the circle into the back of the net.
Earlier Monday, Finland (4-0) defeated Hungary (1-2) to take first place in Group B, while Switzerland (1-2) took its first victory of the tournament 4-3 over Japan (0-3- 1). ).
