Relationship between diabetes and heart disease

A famous cardiologist from Gurgaon says about heart disease and diabetes:

“People with diabetes develop a cardiovascular disease called ‘diabetic heart disease’ (DHD). Compared to non-diabetics, people with diabetes are at greater risk for heart disease at a younger age.”

This statement applies to both type 1 and type 2 patients, both female and male. The increase in blood glucose level increases the risk. The high level of glucose in the blood leads to the deposition of fatty materials on the inner walls of blood vessels, leading to hardening of arteries and blockage, a condition known as atherosclerosis.

Like alcohol, smoking, diabetes and high blood cholesterol, diabetes increases the risk of heart attacks. When these elements are combined with various risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes causes harmful consequences. Patients with diabetes are less receptive to heart treatments such as bypass surgery and angioplasty.

How are diabetes and heart disease related?

There are four types of heart disease that are common in people with diabetes:

1. Ischemic Heart Disease: This is caused by thickening or hardening of the walls of the arteries, which are blood vessels that carry blood to the heart. Plague is deposited on the walls of blood vessels and is known as atherosclerosis.

2. Congestive Heart Failure: It happens when a heart is unable to pump blood enough to meet the body’s needs. This happens due to congestive heart failure where the fluid builds up in the body cells.

3. Cardiomyopathy: This is a situation where the heart muscle gets damaged, which leads to the improper functioning of the heart.

4. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD): This disease occurs when the blood vessels in the legs become narrowed due to blockage from fat deposits, resulting in insufficient blood circulation in the feet and legs. This can lead to amputation of the feet or leg, or even increase the risk of a heart attack.

Patients with diabetes can reduce their risk of heart disease by talking to their doctor about any medications they may be prescribed to prevent or manage the risk factors and making certain lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes include eating a healthy diet, exercising, and stress management.

Take action

If you are addicted to smoking, it’s time to quit now. Talk to your doctor and talk about it. If you’ve tried to quit smoking before, it’s not too late. Many people have tried to quit several times before adopting a good habit.

Almost every individual with diabetes can benefit from increased exercise. It keeps your heart healthy and regulates the sugar level in your blood. Even 20 minutes of brisk walking every day is fruitful. A gym is therefore no longer necessary.

If you are an inactive person, ask your doctor how to get started. Your doctor will let you know what is safe to do.

Most diabetics take medication to lower their blood pressure or to improve cholesterol levels. A daily low dose of aspirin is recommended by the doctor to protect against heart disease.

Be sure to check in with your doctor and have regular medical checkups. Attend all your appointments and let your doctor know how you are. Together you make a healthy heart.
