A debris field has been discovered within the search area by a remotely operated underwater vehicle near the Titanic, the US Coast Guard has said.

“Experts within the unified command are evaluating the information,” he tweeted.

A press conference to discuss the findings is scheduled for tonight.

This report contains major caveats.

It could be something, it could be nothing.

But the US Coast Guard hasn’t been tweeting much in recent days, so it could be significant.

Speaking to experts this week, many worried that Titan may have suffered a catastrophic explosion.

Such a scenario could explain the remains. But, again, this report may turn out to be nothing.

The wreckage was found by a remotely piloted vehicle deployed by the Horizon Arctic, a Canadian ship. The ROV, which is equipped with cameras and sonar, had successfully reached the sea floor.

Titan disappeared on Sunday in the Atlantic Ocean – 435 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada – during an expedition dive to view the wreck of the Titanic.

Also on Thursday, a deep-sea robot called the Victor 6000 headed into the search area. It has remote-controlled arms that can cut cables and perform other maneuvers to free a stuck ship and is capable of going deeper.

Five men are on board: British billionaire Hamish HardingBritish businessman Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman Dawood, US-based OceanGate chief executive and founder Stockton Rush, and French diver pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet.
