Protests and riots erupted in the Paris region after police shot dead a 17-year-old boy who allegedly failed to stop when ordered to by traffic police.

A video circulating on social media shows a police officer pointing a gun at the driver of a car, before a gunshot is heard. The car then crashes.

The Minister of the Interior of France, Gerald Darmanin, said that the video shared on social media is “extremely shocking”.

The teenager, identified as Nael M., died of gunshot wounds to the chest despite emergency treatment.

The officer who allegedly fired the shot was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Nael M. is the second person killed this year in France by police shooting in traffic. Last year, 13 people were killed in this way.

The killing of Nael M. sparked a series of protests on Tuesday evening in Nanterre – the area west of Paris where the teenager was killed.

Several cars and trash cans were burned, while bus stops were destroyed.

At least 24 people were arrested after the riots.
